September 24-26, Troop 44 attend NE Area 4 Campaganza at Moraine State Park near Butler, PA. It was an awesome experience being in attendance with 10,000 other Scouts and Scouters. At the event there was practically anything under the sun to do including climbing, repelling, shooting, saling, kayaking, exhibits, SCUBA and the list goes on and on. Saturday concluded with the stage show that kicked off with sky divers and Coast Guard helicopter fly by. Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca addressed the audience, but headliner of the show was band Smash Mouth who performed. The night concluded with a nice fireworks display. |

Troop 44 held a nature themed campout at Bilgers Rocks in Grampian, PA, October 23rd through the 25th. The campout started out extremely wet with downpours most of the night on Firday. After the showers cleared Saturday morning, the Scouts had a great time climbing around and exploring the rocks. The highlight for many of the Scouts was climbing through the well know Ice Cave. Other activities included finding the Christmas Geocache and completing an Earth Cache that required us to locate specific cracks in the rocks based on GPS coordinates and measure them. We also learned about how frost wedging actually was causing the cracks to grow each year.
Perhaps the other highlight from the campout was learning which fire starters work best in wet weather. Luckilly there was a large supply of Hemlock and Yellow Birch which helped to get fires built, so the patrols could prepare their culinary delights. In our photo gallery you will get to see some of their creations including chicken alfredo, italian sausages and beef stew.
